Our IB English tutor HK team have taught over 500 IB students in the past few years, with over 50% getting over a Level 6. Many universities have minimum IB English requirements. Thus, many IB students are interested to find a tutor to sharpen their english skills.
In this article, we will share information about how our team can help you for various IB english assessments.
For paper 1
For both IB English Literature and IB English language and literature, the paper 1 is an unseen text commentary. For IB English literature, the unseen text is normally a poem and a prose. On the other hand, for IB english language and literature, students typically will get a contemporary text, such as a newspaper article, advertisement or a blog post. In both cases, students will need to write a commentary about the text (s). For higher level students, they are required to write a comparative commentary about 2 texts, whereas for standard level students, they are required to write just one commentary about one text.
There are a number of ways in which our IB english tutor HK team can help you on the paper 1.
Firstly, we will teach you the skills, techniques and perspectives that L7 IB English students use to analyse a text. You will learn a systematic approach to analyse a text effectively. Secondly, we will teach you the writing skills and structure you need to craft a L7 commentary, because you can have all the best ideas, but if you can’t write them in a structured, logical and persuasive manner, you wont get the top marks. Finally, in all of our courses, you will get a large amount of texts that you can practice on. All of the texts are similar to the ones you will see in the IB and are designed to help you practice.
For paper 2
For both IB English literature and IB english language and literature, the paper 2 is based on literature pieces that you have studied at school. You will receive an unseen question that is based on texts you have read in school. The questions are often analytical in nature and are open ended. They are designed to test you understanding of the literature pieces you have studied in school. Many IB students feel overwhelmed about the paper 2. You normally will get 5 questions in total and you need to pick 1 to answer.
What we suggest for all IB students is to write as many practice essays as possible based on IB style exam questions. This is because the questions that show up every year are often very similar. So if you write a practice essay at home, there is a good chance that a similar question will show up on your exams! Moreover, by writing practice essays, you get very good practice in developing arguments based on the literature pieces you have studied.
There are a number of ways in which our team can help you to achieve a L7 in paper 2.
Firstly, we will help you in picking out all the critical elements in your literature piece you need to take note of and memorise. Secondly, we will teach you the question answering framework that level 7 students use, to ensure that your essay is well structured and logical. Finally, for all of the practice essays you write, our IB English tutor HK team will critique it and help you refine it.
For IOC
The IOC is a very demanding assessment that all IB english literature and English language and literature students must face. In the IOC, students will be handed a passage from the literature piece they have studied. The passage that will be handed is unknown to the student. The student will then be given 10 minutes of preparation time to give a 10 minute oral commentary on the text. The IOC is so stressful because firstly, it is an oral assessment. Furthermore, a lot of students feel like they have no idea how to prepare for it, because after all, the passage that will be selected is unknown to the student.
However, the IOC is actually not as difficult as it seems.
Our IB english tutors will focus on teaching you a systematic approach to analyse the passage you are given. Moreover, we will teach you the easiest and most reliable method to break down your commentary into logical chunks. Lastly, we would also give you repeated practice sessions to improve your tonality and fluency in your oral presentation.
